I help people develop their ventures on Maui through my job as center director for the Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network. I have lived in Hawaii since 1989, the longest I have lived anywhere. I was born in Washington, D.C. to U.S. Foreign Service Officer parents and grew up in Italy, Ethiopia, Barbados, and Thailand; as well as the U.S. Northeast (New Haven, CT and New York City).
I have a blog/podcast http://CoolProjectsMaui.com and a more traditional website at http://MauiEnterpriseForum.net.
In addition to business consulting, I am a weekend musician currently primarily singing choral music. A recent musical highlight for me was performing original calypso on a flatbed truck in the Makawao rodeo parade (we were selected "best musical act" two years in a row). For more on my music see http://myspace.com/igluau. One day I would like to write companion music for the the Hawaii futures scenarios developed by Jim Dator's UH futures group.
I believe that everyone should be an entrepreneur and that success is measured by returns to the community, environment, as well as economy. I also think that the greatest barriers to both personal and community success are poor communication across "cultures without flags". This and societal amnesia.
